“So I’ll check the weather wherever you are
Cause I wanna know if you can see the stars tonightIt might be my only right…”
After all these years, Split Screen Sadness still tear me apart. And I mean, this song that makes me cry EVERY TIME I HEAR IT!I was looking up the lyrics online and found a comment by an anon user on sing365.com. I want to share this with you because it express my exact feelings for this song and for John almost to perfection.
So here it is:“Okay. this song/John Mayer is amazing for many reasons, but i’ll just name a few..
First. The Beatles are arguably the best or one of the best bands in the history of the world. musically, harmonically, lyrically.. and I feel only John Mayer could have called them out properly. “all you need is love is a lie” .. It’s a pretty big deal calling out the fucking Beatles, and if you do that, you’ve got some balls. However, his statement is true (just as the beatles original statement was) because anyone who has ever been in love and then got their heart shattered could relate.
Secondly, the production of this song is incredible, from the silky vocals going through a tube mic-pre to the synthesizer to the strings.. it is just a well done track.
His songwriting has matured to a level that I didn’t think was possible after releasing Room for Squares (which still remains one of the best pop/singer-songwriter with a hint of jazz records released in this generation)
Lastly and completely off point.. it seems as though John is doing what John wants to do. If he wants to play the blues in a small club without obnoxious fans screaming in between every other word, he does it. if he wants to lay low, he does it. it doesn’t seem like he’s oppressed by the value-torn industry that remains to be called “the music business.” john mayer keeps it real, and i had a feeling from the start that he’d be the guy to be himself, keep his music real, and not give in to the usual bullshit that 99% of artists and listeners subject themselves to.”
